The Solo Scale:
Staying in London gives you access to all manner of tourist locations, interesting experiences, and great culture. For those who love history or the monarchy, the train trip out of the city to go to Windsor is a great day trip. Luckily, there are many direct ways to get there. Keep in mind there are two train stations — Windsor & Eton Riverside. Of the two, Eton Riverside is the closest option, but Town Centre isn’t too far and brings you to the shops. You can travel directly from Waterloo by purchasing a ticket at the station on the day-of. Make sure you pick the right destination and don’t forget about the return ticket.
Trip Tip: Be careful of how you plan your trip. Your train ticket is linked to your return destination. For example, if you want to get off in Richmond on the way back, your ticket needs to say that or you may not be able to scan your way out of the station).
You don’t necessarily have to be a monarchist to take a visit to Windsor Castle. Windsor Castle has been around since William the Conqueror in some form or another, is the gravesite of many notable regents & influential people, and also happens to still be an occupied residence makes it a fascinating visit. The grounds are sprawling, which means you’ll want to take a full day’s trip to explore it all. By going in the winter, you get most of the castle to yourself, to the point that you could have pictures completely devoid of other tourists.
What Can You Visit?
Some highlights of your visit could include:
- Changing of the Guard
- St. George’s Chapel (resting place of QE II, Henry VIII, Jane Seymour, and more)
- Queen Mary’s Dollhouse
- State Apartments
Afterward, you can stop by some of the pubs or places to eat in the shopping centre before heading back to London. With multiple great options, you can relax and enjoy, knowing that the train station is only a quick walk away. It leaves time for a leisurely meal or drink and not worrying about having to sprint to catch your train back to London, if that’s where you’re coming from!
