The Solo Scale:
If you’re driving across Ireland, it won’t take you that long. In comparison, Ireland is a fairly small country to cross from East to West (or vice-versa). However, you’ll still have plenty to see. It’s very much worth investigating places that you could stop in the middle of your trek.
One great option for a quick stop and lunch is Cashel.
Cashel has easy parking options, a few cheap and quick lunch spots, and proximity to the Rock of Cashel, which is an interesting historical site.
Set on a dramatic outcrop of limestone in the Golden Vale, The Rock of Cashel, iconic in its historic significance, possesses the most impressive cluster of medieval buildings in Ireland. Among the monuments to be found there is a round tower, a high cross, a Romanesque chapel, a Gothic cathedral, an abbey, the Hall of the Vicars Choral and a fifteenth-century Tower House.
The Rock of Cashel is a roughly ten minute hike from the centre of town. That’s where the majority of your parking options are. Even if you’re on a tour with limited time, you’ll be able to make it there. That said, because tours are notorious for short stops, you likely won’t get inside the grounds if you’re only there briefly.
This legendary site is purported to be a place that St. Patrick visited. However, that’s a long time ago (and probably just a myth). What’s left is mostly ruins. That includes things like Cormac’s Chapel, which contains a Romanesque fresco. There’s also the remains of the cemetery and given the high position, you’ll be able to get great views of the landscape around you.

Take a break, soak up some history, grab a bite in town (there’s a great sandwich shop on the main street downtown), and continue on for your Irish adventure!
