Walking the High Line in New York City

The Solo Scale:

If you’re looking for a place to walk in New York City, the default would be Central Park. It’s the most well-known for a reason and has plenty of acreage to explore, including areas like the Ramble. That doesn’t mean it’s the only option.

In truth, the entire city is prime walking grounds. Given how short the blocks are, you can avoid taking taxis or the subway and get all your walking in, but if you’re after a unique walking experience that meshes exercise with art, then you’re going to want to walk the High Line in Chelsea.

It’s one of the most unique parks you’ll ever hike.

While it’s extremely unique, it’s also extremely crowded. The High Line does have opening hours that vary by season. Generally, it opens at 7AM and closes between 8 and 10PM (when there’s some type of sunlight). It’s also an elevated structure, so if you require assistance getting up, you’ll want to locate one of the four elevators. Otherwise, you can take the stairs and start the High Line at any point of your choosing.

I recommend taking the subway to the 14th Street station and beginning your walk here to end in Hudson Yards and the Vessel sculpture. This also places you nice and central if you want to continue walking onward to Times Square or Central Park.

If you’re expecting just one general atmosphere, you’re in for a surprise. There are overlooks, woodland areas, passages, train tracks, and art speckled throughout your walk. Of course, there’s also the city of New York in the background. At various times, you can see the Chrysler Building or the Empire State Building peeking out from where you are.

It’s not as green as you might expect, which should be expected given that it’s a converted rail line. As a result, sometimes it can feel a little packed in. That’s especially true in the middle of the day. If you’re not feeling like this is for you, there are plenty of exits where you can dart off to find something else in New York City to explore.

It can get very busy, so if you’re looking for a peaceful walk where you don’t run into anyone, you may be better off in some of the winding paths of Central Park.

However, if you’re just looking for a good walk, then this is a great option (second only to the Brooklyn Bridge walk or a meander through Central Park, in my opinion).
