Get the best Amsterdam fries at Heertje Friet

The Solo Scale:

If you’re headed to Amsterdam, you may already know that two of the most famous food items to try there are stroopwaffels and their iconic fries. Luckily, if you’re in central Amsterdam, there’s a fry shop that gives you a taste of the latter. It’s not even at a price that gouges you for being a tourist. That’s something that does happen around key tourist locations like the Rijksmuseum. Where can you find that? Heertje Friet.

The shop itself is a tight squeeze. It can only fit about four people in line. It requires that you press in with a lot of other people while waiting for your order. However, they’re very quick about taking your order. They don’t take your name, so make sure you’re listening for the specific item that you ordered, as that will be the only way to know when your order is up.

While there are a few standing areas inside, I highly recommend that you take your food to go. The seats are right up against the people waiting in line or waiting for their order to be filled. As a result, neither is a very comfortable experience.

Plus, if you head outside, you’re right beside one of the many canals. That means you can grab a free seat and enjoy your fries in a truly traditional Dutch way.

I decided to get the “Special Ketchup” option which came with mayonnaise, ketchup, and red onions. The fries are on the well-done side and are extremely crispy as a result. There’s a good amount of salt on them, but unfortunately, they’re really difficult to coat with enough sauces and onions without making a lot of a mess.

There are little wooden forks available to help with spearing the fries. Unfortunately, it pretty much instantly folds under the weight of the fries. You’re going to end up eating this one by hand. Make sure you grab a lot of napkins for this. Luckily, the way the cone is constructed means that it won’t really leak out of the bottom.

I found this to be a pretty good serving size and worked as a lunch. If you want to indulge in fries in Amsterdam by the canals, Heertje Friet is a great and quick option that won’t strain your wallet!
