The Solo Scale:
When I went to Luxembourg this past year, it was on the tail end of a journey through Holland and Belgium. It meant that plenty of fried food (especially frites) were a staple for meals. After all, so many restaurants proclaimed that they had the best ones. By the time I arrived in Luxembourg, I was craving a lighter meal with greens without shortchanging the deliciousness.
Luckily, after doing a little research, I discovered Bazaar.
I spent the morning doing a city tour of Luxembourg that ended just after 11AM. That allowed me to arrive for a very early lunch. Bazaar is a bib gourmand Michelin recommended restaurant. That means it doesn’t have a star, but is recognized for its food. I arrived for my meal at 11:30 and was one of the first to grab a table outside in the square. It was well-shaded, but several of the tables had umbrellas too. The staff here speak French and English. I wound up conversing in French with the waitstaff, but could have switched back if needed.
One thing that was a bit odd. When I asked for tap water rather than from a bottle, they informed me that wasn’t an option. Instead, I opted for an amazing lemonade named Like in Batroun. I knew that I’d be able to a bottle of water at a grocery store nearby after lunch. The drink has notes of lemon, orange blossom and soda water. It wasn’t too sweet and was a nice thing to sip on through the meal.
For my meal, I picked a couple of lighter bites.
The first was a salmon with crispy kataifi pastry on top of the salmon. On the base was yogurt, dill, and dates. The kataifi pastry was so crispy and gave this great texture on top of a nice cool yogurt base. In general, this whole meal fit the bill of missing out on nutritious and fresh ingredients that the fried foods hadn’t been giving me.
The second dish I had was the “avocalloumi”. This dish has grilled avocado, halloumi fried cheese, and pomegranates with coriander on top. Even though fried cheese may sound heavy, the grilled avocado and the pomegranates cut into it and gave it a nice bright freshness and pops of acidity that tempered the halloumi from being too heavy.
The nice thing about a bib gourmand restaurant is that even though you’re getting Michelin-level quality, you’re not paying the same prices. I found this to be a great lunch stop. The open-air seating in central Luxembourg was a fantastic way to take a break in the middle of a sightseeing day and the food was absolutely fantastic. The service was prompt and they checked on me at perfect intervals, always checking if I wanted to add more dishes to my lunch.
