Tasting two of Epic’s most Instagrammed snacks

The chances are that if you’re planning a trip to Epic Universe, you’ve done a little hunting around the internet already. If you have, you’ve probably come across some iconic treats that pop up on everyone’s Must Try list. There’s a lot of food at Epic, and because it’s a new park, it could take a while to work through it. When I went, I had a single day, so other than a lunch at Oak and Star (LINK), I wanted to prioritize some of the most raved-about snacks.

The question on my mind remained — are these snacks actually worth it? Or were these purely invented to be posted on social media? In other words, do they look good but taste only average? Let’s get into the two snacks so you can decide if you want to try them for yourself.

DK Crush Float

The version that I got might look different than what you see on social. That’s because the friend I went with had celiac and so we had to opt out of the waffle cone. For me, this worked out well because I’m not a huge fan of waffle cones. The drink took a little longer than usual to make, however, it had the key components that made it so delicious — namely the banana dole whip and the pineapple soda.

The drink is super refreshing, both from the soda and the dole whip and is a super refreshing way to spend some of your time in Donkey Kong Country.

However, my favourite part of this is the thick plastic spoon that comes with it. It’s a great souvenir. Plus, there’s lot of water fountains nearby so you can clean it off to take it home. For the price (around $12.99 without the mug), you need to take the value where you can get it.

In terms of amount, it was more than enough for my friend and I to split, so unless you really want your own mug & treat, I highly recommend splitting the price and the treat.

Is this one worth it? For me, absolutely. I’m a huge fan of banana soft serve and the dole whip was amazing, plus I still use the spoon in my kitchen even though the trip is over. The best move here is splitting it with someone else. If I were going solo, I’d still enjoy it. However, the size would likely be too much. It would definitely knock out my ability to try more things. Sharing it also helps to halve the cost. That makes it a lot more palatable as a snack option.

The Mac & Cheese Cones

Not only is this snack popular by virtue of social media, but it’s got its own merchandise in the park. If you love the mac and cheese cones, you can memorialize that with a t-shirt to show your love. So the question is, are these bready filled cones worth it?

TRIP TIP: Try and hit up the Isle of Berk later in the day. Because it’s the closest portal to the entrance, a lot of people start the day there. Plus, that puts it close to lunchtime. There’s currently no pre-ordering through mobile working for the location (even though the app may have you thinking otherwise). The line dwindles a lot more by the early afternoon.

This was a great afternoon snack after being in the park for a while. It helped to bridge my way into a late dinner. I opted for the PB+J version and the pulled pork layered in with the mac and cheese was fantastic. However, there’s a big caveat. The fillings don’t go that deep. As a result, the majority of this snack is bread in the cone.

Is this one worth it? I paid around $18.99 for the cone, but it was substantial and hearty enough to be lunch instead of a snack. Plus, it lived up to taste expectations, which is sometimes an issue with Insta-famous foods. However, I do think that it’s a little overpriced. After all, around half of the cone is just bread. It’s good bread, but it’s bread and that’s not worth about $10. I don’t think this is one that I would do again, but it’s worth trying once.

This is just the tip of the snack iceberg. If you’re headed to Epic, there’s a dozen more snacks to try, but these two are likely the ones that have popped up across your feed. Try them for yourself, but know they won’t disappoint taste-wise — even if the price can be a little steep. If you want to read more about the park and the other food waiting for you, you can check out their website and navigate through their options.
