The Solo Scale:
The moment you arrive in Rotorua, you’ll know it. It’s hard to miss the sulfurous smell that hits you, but it’s perfectly natural. Or, in this case, perfectly geothermal. That smell is hydrogen sulphide, a byproduct of the geothermal activity. It’s also the reason you can spend a day at the spa soaking in their pools and springs.
The slightly acidic Priest Spring waters relieve aches and pains while the alkaline waters of the Rachel Spring, nourish skin.

The most famous spa in Rotorua is the Polynesian, located right in the middle of downtown and on the lake, giving you privacy as you soak. Once you’ve paid your entry fee, you can go inside. This is where you can get access to a locker and get a key n a wristband to avoid losing it. You can bring a phone or other items with you. Keep in mind that you’ll have to keep track of them as you move from area to area. It’s not an overly large complex, but depending on time of day, it typically isn’t that busy and you won’t find yourself fighting for spots.
On top of the pools, there are several lounging chairs. These are not your typical beach loungers and are made of a stone material in a very unique shape. Still, it’s a great way to relax if you’re starting to feel like your fingers are beginning to prune.
There’s an array of day spa offerings that you can book if you’re wanting to truly relax, but if you’re just interested in a soak, carve out around 2 hours of your day in Rotorua and you won’t feel rushed at all. If you’re staying in the city proper, you can easily walk there as well.
