The Solo Scale:
It’s not a huge secret that dining choices aren’t fantastic at Magic Kingdom if you want a sit-down experience. Either it’s character dining that comes with a hefty price tag, or a prix fixe that comes with a hefty price tag, or maybe just snacks (that are becoming more generic every week, it seems). That said, Adventureland is here to save the day by offering Skipper Canteen, aka “World Famous Jungle Cuisine”.
Not only is this a great option for food, but the experience is top notch, especially if you like puns. Just like the Jungle Cruise, your servers will be serving up pun after pun, intended to make you groan. I’ve had multiple servers and the most puns I get is actually when I’m there on my own. Somehow, being a solo traveller really makes them want to break you.

While you can make reservations, Skipper Canteen is typically available for walk-up reservations. If doesn’t ever get too much of a line. I’ve dined there three times. While I had reservations, many of the tables around me were empty every time. That makes it a good bet for a last-minute option. Got picky eaters? There’s stuff on the menu for them, even if it might sound a bit daunting when you review the menu.
My personal favourite to order is off the appetizer menu — Ida’s Cachapas, which comes in a generous portion. There’s also something off the secret menu that’s amazing. That’s the the pao de queijo. Don’t let the name scare you. It’s gluten-free Brazilian cheese bread that comes with a green sauce and it’s divine. This recipe also shows up in a few Disney cookbooks, which means that I’ve been able to recreate — and has become a family favourite.

In general, the service here is also extremely quick. If you’re dining at night, the servers will ask if you plan to go see the fireworks show. If you are, they’ll make sure you get out in time to enjoy it. It’s those extra touches which make visiting Skipper’s a great choice.
So if you’re headed to Magic Kingdom and you still haven’t figured out a sit-down restaurant, give Skipper Canteen a try, and then, hop on over and see if you can’t see the backside of water on the Jungle Cruise that’s just next door.
If you want to see what’s on the menu these days, head over to the Skipper Canteen website.
