The Solo Scale:
If you’re looking for a unique experience outside of Dublin and love horses, there’s a great option for you. One of the more interesting things is a visit to the Irish National Stud & Gardens.
Just outside Dublin is Kildare, where the National Stud is located. What’s a National Stud, you might ask? Well, the name gives a little bit of it away. Here, you’ll find plenty of studs, many of them former racehorses and prize stock. The studs are used for breeding with the mares to produce lots of baby foals. With luck, some of them may even grow up to be successful racehorses one day.
Even if you’re not a horse person, you’ve still got some distance between you and them. The real treat is being able to see prize studs and foals. As you take the tour, you’ll see many breeds, including a couple of miniature horses. If you love racing, there might even be a few notable horses that you see. Your guide will explain some of the names and accomplishments of the horses as you go through the Stud.
Once you’re done with the tour, you can spend time in the Japanese gardens — a peaceful little respite. This additional little section also has the restaurant attached. If this is a half-day diversion for you, it’s an excellent way to get a meal in, get close to nature, while also learning new things.
It’s a unique visit, fun if you’re a fan of horses. Between getting to see so many horses and getting to learn more about famous racers, it’s a fun day trip. Plus, ending with the gardens is a truly zen experience. If you’re on a self-drive across Ireland, this is a great option to get out and stretch your legs!
