Have you visited these ten underrated NYC sights?

If you’ve already checked off the top sites to see in New York City (Top 10 New York Experiences For Your First Trip), but still want to explore the nooks and crannies of the city, there’s still plenty for you to explore. After all, in a city as big as New York, you can’t do it all in a day.

#1: Air & Space Museum

Where else can you see fighter jets, a submarine, and the spaceship Enterprise (…but not that one).? The Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum lives up to its name, and you can become like the explorers as you walk around a navy carrier, see exhibits that have gone literally out of this world, and crawl into the tight space of a formerly-active submarine.

#2: Wall Street Statues – The Bull & The Girl

One is iconic and has represented Wall Street for years, but the other (The Girl) is a more modern addition, but incredible nonetheless. It’s probably a little less crowded if you go on a weekend, but both statues are worth seeing and posing with (and, if you’re like many other people judging by the colouration differences, giving a bit of a rub for good luck).

#3: American Museum of National History

Just outside Central Park, you’ll be able to visit a museum famous for its role in movies and TV shows, but it’s far more than just a setting. The American Museum of National History has their mainstay exhibits (like the iconic blue whale model), but also has several add-ons that you can add to your trip.

#4: High Line

It’s taking a walk in NYC like no other! The High Line was built on an old converted rail line (and you can still see some of the tracks). It’s a public park elevated above the city, which has art installations you walk past. It’s a unique way to enjoy a park in New York City, and fun to amble around (though it does get narrow in some areas!)

#5: New York Public Library

You don’t need to go to the Public Library with the sole intention of taking out books. Whether you want to see it because of its role in Ghostbusters, or want to admire the ceiling in the Rose Reading Room (that puts most libraries to shame), you can take a quick spin inside — and maybe even spend some time here avoiding the rush of the city with a good book.

#6: Central Park Zoo

There’s a lot to see in Central Park, which means this is just one additional stop, but it’s a fun one (especially if you have kids in your party). The space is larger than you might think, but don’t expect to get massive animals. Still, for being located in Central Park, it’s a great little option to spend your time.

These guys are definitely having a great time!

#7: Frick Collection

When you’re visiting the Guggenheim or the Metropolitan, there’s another smaller museum nearby that’s great for a quick visit. The Frick Collection lives in a building that takes up a whole city block and has plenty to see — including some notable art pieces. There’s a little more detail to be found in my article on the Collection here.

#8: Macy’s

No matter what time of year that you go, the Macy’s on 34th Street has more to offer than just their products. You’ll also be treated to their incredible displays that will genuinely take your breath away. You can also do a little shopping here, if only to say that you purchased something from the Macy’s in NYC — and if you’re lucky, you’ll even be there in the middle of a great sale.

#9: Walk the Brooklyn Bridge

True, this might not be for everyone as it requires a certain amount of mobility, but if you’re able to, walking the Brooklyn Bridge (ideally starting in Brooklyn and walking into Manhattan) is one of those experiences that feel like you have to do to tick off your bucket list. It can get crowded to do this walk, so going a little earlier in the morning is safer if you want a little peace and quiet on your walk (and always, always, always, remember to hydrate).

#10: St. Patrick’s Cathedral

Even if you’re not overly religious (or Catholic), St. Patrick’s Cathedral on 5th Avenue is iconic and is a fixture in plenty of New York City media. If you are religious, it’s like many of the other large cathedrals that you can visit — there’s an awe-inspiring reverence and mysticism that comes of sitting in the pews. If you’re lucky, the cathedral may even be adorned with flowers or dressed up for an event.

So that’s ten more things for you to see in New York City — some of them might already have been on your bucket list, and maybe some were a surprise. There’s dozens more things in New York, of course, which is why you can go back and visit the Big Apple as often as some people do. For now, though, check out these ten, and let me know which hidden NYC gem is your favourite!

So, how many of them have you done?
