Every day in Ypres, at the Menin Gate Memorial, the city comes to a stop to salute the fallen. Nestled in the heart of so many momentous sites from World War I, Ypres holds this daily memorial at 8PM. It’s held in memory of soldiers of the British Empire and its allies. While the site specifically calls out these soldiers, it’s an opportunity to mourn the loss of all human lives in a war of terrible attrition.

Menin Gate is located just on the outskirts of town. If you’re staying in one of the nearby hotels, it’s a short walk to the Gate before the ceremony. Before that, you can explore the museums in the middle of town or enjoy the happenings in the square. When I was there, there was a blacksmith competition making poppies. There’s also plenty of restaurants to eat dinner at and try some Belgian frites. Even still, I had plenty of time to make it with a decent view. The ceremony runs at 8PM each day, which gives you plenty of time in town prior to the ceremony.

Best of all, there’s no planning involved. There’s no admission required and viewing is first-come, first-served. If you’ve been touring WWI battlefields all day, this musical tribute is a contrast to the stark headstones and granite grief.

Not every ceremony is the same. During some, in addition to the bugle players, there will be other performances. When I was there, there was also a band playing. There are also specific occasions when there are specific wreath layers.

If you’re going, there typically is a small crowd, but you won’t have to arrive super early unless you’re intent on having a front row spot. Other than keeping the main throughfare clear, you can stand anywhere to watch the ceremony — which doesn’t take very long, but is an appropriate way to cap the end of your day if you’re touring WWI sights.
