The Tower of London: Glorious Gems and Horrible Histories

The Solo Scale:

For those seeking a multitude of experiences, the Tower of London can check off plenty at once:

  • Visit a key setting in some of London’s most interesting (and goriest) history
  • Gaze upon the gorgeous crown jewels that still play a part in modern royal fashion
  • Get a fantastic view of Tower Bridge
  • See the stoic guards and witness the guard change (every two hours)
  • See some of the Tower’s famous ravens (currently there are six that call the Tower their home, all of them named!)

There’s also the benefit of its location. Right on the Thames and near Tower Bridge, it’s centrally positioned to make it an easy addition when you’re in London.

What does the experience include?

Your Tower of London admission ticket includes the Crown Jewels, the ravens, the public outside areas of the Tower of London (including the Moat), Tower Green, White Tower, including Line of Kings, and Armoury in Action, Bloody Tower, Medieval Palace, Battlements, Torture at the Tower exhibition and Fusiliers museum.

What’s included in your ticket

If nothing else, seeing the Crown Jewels is an experience that feels like something you shouldn’t be able to do. Of course, they’re still heavily guarded, but it’s a peek into a whole other world of riches and luxury. If you’re feeling a little luxurious yourself, they do also sell jewelry in the gift shop nearby (I’m still pleased with the pearl earrings I bought during my visit).

Speaking of guards, it’s a great opportunity to see the guards on duty without having to fight the crowds at Buckingham Palace. Don’t forget that the guards are working, so try and be respectful if you want to take photos and then leave them to do their work.

For those who love history, the Tower of London is rife with it, given its central place in so many historical events.

That ranges from its initial days as William the Conqueror’s fortress to the mint. It’s also notable for being the prison for the two princes. Plus, it’s the last place several prisoners lived prior to the execution at the Tower. That includes Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard, and Lady Jane Grey. That’s only a short selection because 125 people were killed at the Tower over the years at Tower Green.

Not only is the Tower Green where so many executions happened, but it’s also the burial place. Nearby, the Church of St Peter ad Vincula is where you can pay your respects to two of Henry the VIII’s wives and pass a moment of silence for the dozens of people caught up in political fervour.
