The Solo Scale:
If you’re going to England, there might be a few reasons for why you’re ready to immerse yourself in Tudor history. Maybe you saw a piece of media that’s piqued your interest. It could be that you love history from that era. It doesn’t necessarily matter why you decided to visit. England is full of castles and historical sights that will fit your interests. Hever Castle happens to be one of them. It’s easily accessible from London. Plus, it’s a beautiful stop in the warmer months.
For Hever Castle, it’s easy to access with a phone and access to data to give you a map. Even if you find yourself driving on smaller roads with tight squeezes amongst the hedges, it’s all part of the adventure. When you arrive, there’s plenty of parking on-site. Luckily, it’s not that close to London, which helps to reduce the popularity of the castle. As a result, you won’t be fighting too many crowds. Hever itself is a peaceful respite in the countryside, chock full of history and beautifully manicured gardens.
If you’re a fan of Anne Boleyn, this is also a great destination. Hever Castle and Gardens was the childhood home of Anne Boleyn. Not only is it notable for that, but it’s rife with historical artifacts. In addition to that, it also walks you through the events that lead to Anne’s rise to notoriety. The castle itself has been done up with fantastic historical pieces.
Maybe it’s not history that interests you. Maybe it’s the beautiful castle grounds. That’s something you can find here too. Set on 125 acres, there’s so much to explore during your visit.
Here, as with many other great homes, palaces, and chateaus, the gardens are what really shine. Within the museum itself, there are mannequins beside exhibits which will give more context into the Boleyn family beyond Anne. It’s a slice of Tudor history that you can get without straining and fighting crowds to see it.
The true gem is what lies outdoors. This is where you’ll find beautiful gardens and little shops peppered throughout, and with a lack of London crowds, you’ll be able to take plenty of pictures and take all the time you need (and want) to explore. You don’t have to worry about not having enough time, either. The garden is easy to walk (not a garden on the level of Versailles). Even saying that, there are plenty of places to ramble and get lost without straining your legs.
If all this sounds interesting to you, maybe it’s time for a day-trip outside London? Find more information here and plan your visit today! If you’re in England, spending the afternoon in Hever is a perfect diversion on your way West to other destinations (such as Bath or Stratford).
