The Solo Scale:
If you’re headed off for a beach holiday in Nice, there are a lot of hotels you can choose from. There are the upper class posh ones (like Hotel Negresco), the usual chain options, and then there are several options with lots of quaint charm. I would say that The Deck hotel is one of the latter two. Though it is part of a chain, it’s a chain of boutique hotels. Situated only a five minute walk from the beach and several of the most popular beach clubs, it’s also equidistant to shops, restaurants, and public transit.
In general, you can walk to the Old Town in twenty minutes too, if you’ve got the energy. It’s part of what makes The Deck a fantastic option. So, if you’re serious about booking, let’s get into some of the features of the hotel!
You can find The Deck Hotel on Rue Maccarani. The entrance is a little subdued, which isn’t a bad thing for security purposes. When you head inside, you enter on street level, but the lobby is on the first floor. You can either take the stairs or the elevator. In this area, you’ll find some rattan hanging chairs to lounge in.
One really nice thing about the hotel is that it has fantastic air-conditioning. I went in August during a heat wave and the first blast of cool air from this hallway was always a blissful way to re-enter the hotel. The same strong air-conditioning is also in the rooms. That’s a huge plus and you don’t have to worry about climate control in this hotel.
If you’ve purchased it, the main floor where the check-in also has the dining area. The breakfast space has two areas with one devoted to cold items and another to hot. Everything at breakfast was passable, but nothing to write home about. However, if you want to purchase without adding on breakfast, there’s a grocery store across the street and several other breakfast options nearby (both small cafes and franchises like McDonald’s).
You’ll quickly notice that The Deck prides themself on their nautical theme. At times, I felt like I was actually on a cruise ship. I loved that it gave some character to the hotel and made it feel different than a Mercure or another chain.
The rooms continue with the theming in such a bright and charming way. One caveat I have is that if you want more room, opt out of the single cabin. While it had a decent amount of space, there wasn’t really a place to store my luggage. That led to some pretty complicated packing and repacking since the space was tight. However, the amenities were great and there was even a minifridge available.
As for the hotel itself, since you’re so close to the beach, they make sure that you can take advantage. If you want to try a beach club, the desk can help you to book that, but you will have to go first thing in the morning. Afternoon visits are out of the question as the clubs will be fully booked.
If you want to do a public beach day (like I did), then you can take advantage of The Deck’s free offerings. They have towels and umbrellas available for loan that you can take to the beach. Outside every elevator is a place to deposit used towels on your way back. Even better, the beach is only a five minute walk away.
Once you’re done at the beach, there’s lots in Nice to explore. In terms of location, it’s nicely central. There are multiple restaurants within steps, a grocery store right across the way, and it’s under 10 minutes to walk to the nearest tram stop that can take you to Old Town Nice and the port, where even more restaurants and Nice charm is waiting.
Overall, The Deck was a fantastic place to rest my head when I was in Nice. It was central, themed and felt a little more exciting than a normal hotel, had great amenities, and the rooms were clean and well-maintained. I would absolutely recommend them and would go back another time, if I’m returning to Nice (which is absolutely on my bucket list!)
