The Solo Scale:
Monteverde in Costa Rica is a naturalists’ paradise. Between the night hikes, the bird-watching, and the incredible vegetation and wildlife within this cloud forest haven, you can see it all. Thanks to the Butterfly Garden in Monteverde, that includes dozens of various butterfly varieties!
If you’re planning to walk there, there’s a steep hill that won’t cause too much grief going down, but can be a bit of a hike coming back up! If you’re planning to drive, there’s a small parking lot across from the butterfly garden with spots available.
Once you’ve arrived, your admission ticket includes an hour-long tour that introduces you not only to three various butterfly gardens, but an up-close experience with spiders and other insects (if you’re squeamish, you might want to stand back for this first portion of the tour).
Walking through these butterfly gardens transports you to a gorgeous paradise. Costa Rica (and especially Monteverde) isn’t lacking in that regard. Being treated to so many incredible butterfly varieties in one place is an incredible treat. If you’re lucky, you might even be there when they release a newly emerged butterfly into one of the gardens!
In-person tours are available from 9AM – 3PM and require no reservation. Ready to take flight (and take hike?). Check out the Monteverde Butterfly Gardens website for admission and visit details.
If you’re looking for something in between your other Monteverde adventures, this is a great 1-2 hour excursion!
